Bleed, Safe Zones and Trim: How to Set Up Your Sticker Artwork Correctly
Bleed is an extension of your background beyond the cut edge. The trim line is where the cut happens. The safe zone is the area inside the trim where your important design elements need to stay. Together, these three zones protect your artwork from the small variations that happen during cutting, and getting them right is the difference between a sticker that arrives looking exactly as designed and one that has a white hairline edge or clipped text.
Why Printers Need Bleed, Trim, and Safe Zones
Stickers are cut by machine, and machines have tolerances. Even a well-calibrated cutter can vary slightly from the intended cut line across a print run. On most printed materials, that variation is invisible. On a sticker, it shows immediately.
If your background colour or design element stops exactly at the cut line and the cutter runs even slightly outside it, the result is a thin strip of unprinted white stock visible along one or more edges. That hairline isn't a printing error, and it isn't a quality issue with the cutter. It's the natural result of a design that was set up without accounting for the tolerance that every cutting process has.
Bleed and safe zones account for that tolerance in opposite directions. Bleed extends the design beyond the cut so there's always printed colour right to the edge no matter where the cut lands. The safe zone keeps important content away from the edge so there's always room for the cut to land without clipping anything that matters. The trim line sits between the two, marking where the cut is intended to happen.
Understanding all three as a system, rather than as separate technical requirements, is what makes setting up artwork straightforward.
What Is Bleed?
Bleed is additional artwork that extends beyond the intended cut line of your sticker. It exists purely to give the cutter somewhere to land without exposing unprinted stock.
For all custom sticker products at OzStickerPrinting, extend your artwork 2mm beyond the trim line on every side. This creates 4mm of additional artwork across the overall width and height of the file.
The bleed area itself will be cut away in production. It never appears on the finished sticker. Its only job is to ensure that the colour or design extends far enough that even if the cut lands slightly outside the intended line, there's no white edge on the result.
For die-cut stickers, bleed follows the outline of the shape. If your sticker is a circle, the bleed extends outward from the circle's edge in all directions. If it's an irregular shape, the bleed follows every contour of that shape. Any background colour or design element that reaches the edge of your artwork needs to extend into the bleed area.
For kiss-cut stickers, the same principle applies to the sticker shape itself. The backing sheet has its own dimensions, but the bleed applies to the sticker design's cut line, not the outer edge of the backing.
A common misunderstanding is that bleed only matters if your design has a coloured background. It matters any time a design element, whether that's a colour block, a gradient, a photograph, or an illustration, reaches the edge of the sticker. If your sticker has a white background and no design elements touching the edges, bleed is less critical. For everything else, it's non-negotiable.
What Is the Trim Line?
The trim line, sometimes called the cut line, is the intended boundary of your finished sticker. It's where the cutter is programmed to cut.
In your artwork file, the trim line marks the exact final size of the sticker. Everything outside the trim line is either bleed (which gets cut away) or backing sheet. Everything inside the trim line is what the customer sees on the finished sticker.
For die-cut stickers, the trim line follows the shape of the design. For kiss-cut stickers, it marks the boundary of the sticker face. For standard rectangle or square stickers, it's a simple rectangular boundary at the finished dimensions.
The trim line itself doesn't print. It's a guide in your file that tells the cutter where to cut. In most design software, it appears as a coloured line on a separate layer, typically marked in a spot colour like registration black or a specific Pantone so the RIP software can identify and isolate it from the printable artwork.
When you're setting up your file, the trim line is your reference point for both bleed and safe zone. Bleed extends outward from it; the safe zone sits inward from it.

What Is a Safe Zone?
The safe zone is the area inside the trim line where your important design elements need to stay. It accounts for the same cutting tolerance that bleed accounts for, but in the opposite direction: while bleed protects against cuts that land too far out, the safe zone protects against cuts that land too far in.
For all OzStickerPrinting products, keep all important text, logos, and design elements at least 2mm inside the trim line.
That buffer means that even if the cutter runs slightly inside the intended cut line, nothing critical gets clipped. A logo that sits right on the trim line on a logo sticker risks having its edge cut off. The same logo sitting comfortably inside that boundary is protected.
The safe zone applies to anything you can't afford to lose: brand names, contact details, URLs, logos, faces in photography, and any design element whose partial removal would make the sticker look wrong. Decorative background elements that bleed to the edge by design don't need to respect the safe zone. Everything that matters does.
For stickers with a lot of text or a complex layout, the safe zone is worth building into your template before you start designing. It's far easier to constrain your layout from the start than to move elements closer to the centre after the design is done.
Common Artwork Mistakes
No bleed on a coloured background. The most common submission error. The design has a solid colour or gradient background that stops at the trim line, with no bleed extension. Result: a white hairline edge on the finished sticker. Fix: extend the background 2mm beyond the trim line on all sides.
Text too close to the trim line. Type that sits within 2mm of the cut edge risks being partially clipped, particularly on die-cut shapes where the cut follows a curve and the tolerance can affect different parts of the edge differently. Fix: keep all text at least 2mm inside the trim line.
Bleed on a white background when it isn't needed. The inverse mistake: adding a bleed area filled with white when the sticker has a white background. This is harmless but unnecessary. If there's nothing to extend, there's nothing to bleed.
Die-cut shape not matching the artwork. On die-cut stickers, the cut path needs to follow the actual shape of the design. Submitting a rectangular file and expecting a die-cut result, or providing a cut path that doesn't align with the design edges, produces a miscut sticker. Fix: ensure the cut path is supplied as a separate vector layer that exactly follows the intended sticker outline.
Low resolution artwork at print size. Not strictly a bleed issue, but frequently paired with it. A file that's set up at 72 DPI at the intended print size will print soft or blurry regardless of how well the bleed is set up. Fix: supply raster artwork at a minimum of 300 DPI at the final print size, or supply vector artwork that scales without resolution loss.
Designing at a scaled size. Setting up artwork at half size and expecting it to scale up cleanly at output. Bleed and safe zone measurements are absolute, not proportional. A 4mm total bleed at 50% scale becomes 2mm at 100%, which isn't enough. Fix: always design at the actual intended print size.
How to Set Up Your Artwork
Canva
Canva doesn't support custom bleed settings natively, but you can account for bleed manually by building it into your canvas size.
- When creating a new design, set your canvas dimensions to 4mm larger than your intended sticker size on each dimension. For a 100x100mm sticker, set the canvas to 104x104mm. This gives you 2mm of bleed on each side.
- Extend any background colours, gradients, or design elements that reach the edge of your sticker all the way to the edge of the canvas.
- Keep all important text, logos, and critical design elements at least 2mm inside the intended cut line, which sits 2mm in from the canvas edge on all sides.
- When downloading, choose PDF (Print) for the best available output quality, then check that your bleed, trim, and safe zones are set correctly before submitting the file.
Adobe Illustrator
Illustrator is the preferred tool for sticker artwork setup. It handles bleed natively and produces vector output that scales without quality loss.
- When creating a new document, set your artboard to the exact finished size of your sticker (the trim size, not including bleed).
- In the New Document dialog, set the bleed fields to 2mm on all sides. Illustrator will display a red bleed boundary outside the artboard.
- Extend any background elements and edge-touching design elements to the red bleed boundary.
- Create a new layer for your safe zone guide. Draw a rectangle 2mm inside the artboard edge on all sides and set it to a visible colour with no fill. Lock this layer. Use it as your reference when placing text and logos.
- For die-cut stickers, create your cut path as a separate layer. The cut path should be a vector shape filled with a spot colour (typically a specific Pantone or registration black) set to overprint. Label this layer clearly as "Cut Line" or "Die Line."
- When saving for submission, export as PDF with "Use Document Bleed Settings" checked. Ensure all fonts are outlined or embedded.
Adobe Photoshop
Photoshop is not the ideal tool for sticker artwork setup. It can handle high-resolution raster artwork, but preparing production-ready vector cut paths for die-cut stickers is better handled in Illustrator. If you're working in Photoshop, design at 300 DPI, add 4mm to your canvas dimensions to account for bleed, and use guides to mark your trim line and safe zone manually. For die-cut stickers, you'll need to supply a separate vector cut path, either as a standalone AI file or by placing your Photoshop artwork into an Illustrator document and setting up the cut path there. For kiss-cut and standard shape stickers, a high-resolution TIFF or PDF export at 300 DPI is acceptable.
General file submission checklist
Before submitting any artwork file, run through these checks:
- Total bleed of 4mm across the artwork, with background extended 2mm beyond the trim line on all sides
- All important elements sitting at least 2mm inside the trim line
- Colour mode set to CMYK as opposed to RGB
- Resolution at 300 DPI minimum for raster elements
- Fonts outlined or embedded
- Die-cut path supplied as a separate vector layer if applicable
- File saved as PDF, AI, or high-resolution PNG
Final Thoughts
Getting bleed, trim, and safe zones right isn't complicated once you know what each one is there for. Bleed keeps white edges from appearing. The safe zone keeps important details away from the cut. The trim line shows you where the finished sticker will be cut. Set them up before you start designing, and you can get on with the part that actually matters: making the artwork look good.
